Hawaii County police in the South Kohala District are reminding residents to lock their car doors.

Hawaii County police in the South Kohala District are reminding residents to lock their car doors.

A recent spree of about four to five vehicles that were broken into over a weeklong period has prompted police to remind residents to lock the doors to their vehicles and keep their eyes peeled for any suspicious activity.

The incidents occurred near the Waimea Ball Park area during the evening and nights or early morning hours, according to a release.

According to police, individuals are entering unlocked vehicles and taking items.

Lt. Juergen Canda said the announcement was not to cause panic, but to keep the public informed.

Canda said the break-ins are still under investigation, and police are alerting the public to lock their doors so the incidents don’t continue.

“All of these cases could have been avoided if everyone locked their cars,” he said. Police are also reminding residents to avoid leaving valuables inside their cars, to use exterior lighting in order to deter criminals, and perhaps start a neighborhood watch program.

If an incident occurs, residents should acquire the person’s description, including height, skin, hair color, etc., a vehicle description and license plate number and anything suspicious and call 935-3311.
